This is a basic approach for developing a model of the enterprise. Participants define the resources used or managed in their company and the life cycle for each resource.

Why and When?

Use this approach to replace traditional enterprise and information strategy planning. Replace traditional Information Engineering business area identification with resource life cycle analysis. Using this approach enables definition of both data and process projects – data projects are broad in scope enabling integration while process project are narrow in scope enabling delivery of a process or system design. Resource Life Cycle Analysis, by Ronald Ross (see Bibliography), is the basis of this approach. This should be the first approach for any data warehouse effort – it defines the structure for subject areas.

PRI (Peer Review Inspection) is a method of quality inspection. It is a structured, in-depth examination of all or part of an “artifact” (work product), such as purpose, contents, presentation, construction, and performance, for the purpose of identifying defects (errors and deviations from specification, convention, or standard).

PRIs are intended to discover (and indirectly prevent future) defects, lower costs, simplify, and improve performance and safety. The tangible results of a PRI are the identification of defects in workmanship; identification of deviations from specification, standard, or convention; a report; and a plan for the correction of defects. PRIs are performed by a team.

The benefits of detecting defects early is to reduce the need for later detection and rework, and to prevent their leakage into subsequent activities. Consequential benefits of PRIs include reducing development cycle time and lower costs. PRIs provide the most impact when conducted early in the work product life cycle.

The Nominal Group Technique (NGT) is most frequently used when bringing together a group of people who have not met each other and may not see each other again in the future. Delbecq, Van de Ven & Gustafson developed it in 1975.

Use it for problem-oriented, solution-oriented, or solution implementation type meetings. It drives quickly through a voting process. Beware that the quality of the decision may be suspect since a larger number (ie, more votes) does not necessarily mean a higher quality answer or response.

NOTE: Nominal group is also known as round robin, structured go around, and other terms.

The purpose of New Thinking is to enable a group of participants to think out of the box. The major problem with conventional thinking processes is that they tend to rely on analysis of the existing situation —almost to an extreme. The basis of “New Thinking” is that to get out of the box, drop the current and drive more towards the future. Instead of reducing to a solution, we expand to solutions. The process that follows has been adapted from Breakthrough Thinking by Gerald Nadler.
