Some even claim it remains one of the seven must-read books about the <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/agile-facilitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Agile<\/a> mindset. Therefore, with a foreword by Jeff Sutherland, and included within the set of Mike Cohn\u2019s signature books, take two to three hours and give it a quick read. However, it does presume some previous familiarity with the Agile Scrum framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Product Owner Role<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Beginning with an understanding of the role of Product Owner the old-school versus new-school comparison of product management certainly reads like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20260106090117\/https:\/\/mgrush.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MGR<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">USH<\/span><\/a><\/em>\u2019s explanation of traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitative-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leadership<\/a> versus <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/servant-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">servant<\/a> leadership. Stressing the importance of self-organizing teams, our \u201cNobody is Smarter than Everybody\u201d gets duplicated with Pickler\u2019s:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe wisdom of many is preferred to the brilliance of one.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[1]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Naturally, the Product Owner role stresses <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/collaborate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collaboration<\/a>, particularly with the <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/scrum-master-facilitator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scrum Master<\/a> and product <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/structured-meetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stakeholders<\/a>. Because, as Product Owner, they . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Represent the customers and the product users<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Identify and describe customer needs and product <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/scope-creep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">functionality<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitate-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visioning<\/a> activities that bring the vision to life<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Stress teamwork and collaborative <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/meeting-argumentation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decision-making<\/a> to ensure shared ownership<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Envisioning the Product<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Therefore the Product Owner, through the Product Backlog, converts the product <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitate-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vision<\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[2]<\/span> to attributes by securing answers to solid questions such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Who is going to purchase the product?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Who is going to use the product?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What needs does the product address?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How much value does the product add?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What attributes are critical for the product\u2019s success?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Where will the product excel?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Compared to competitive alternatives, what are the unique selling points?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Where and how much revenue will be derived?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What do we need to do to win?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pickler leans on Cockburn\u2019s logic of <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitate-prioritization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prioritization<\/a>, namely:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sacrifice others for this<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Try to keep<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sacrifice this for others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After that, they are combined into a <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/faster-meetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">product roadmap<\/a>. MG RUSH covers numerous methods in other articles, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/requirements-gathering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">Plan, Do, Check, Act<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/root-cause-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Perspectives<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/scenario-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scenarios<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\">Trade Journal Review<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Kano Model<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Working with the Product Backlog<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pickler follows with evidence-based support for managing the Product Backlog.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>He begins by applying DEEP that he attributes to Mike Cohn:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/real-win-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D<\/b>etailed<\/a> appropriately<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/risk-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>E<\/b>stimated<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/meeting-boundaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>E<\/b>mergent<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/quantitative-swot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>P<\/b>rioritized<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He further suggests that Product Backlog descriptions can be detailed, or course-graining (called <i>epics<\/i>). The Product Owner is responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitation-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">structuring<\/a> and refining the Product Backlog. Items may be <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/how-to-categorize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grouped<\/a> by functionality to create <i>themes<\/i>. For instance, the calendar function is a theme of a smartphone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Each theme generally represents \u201cbetween two and five-course <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/scenario-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requirements<\/a>. (<i>epics<\/i>)\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Next, he discusses methods of valuing or <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/perceptual-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prioritizing<\/a> backlog items that help the Product Owner prepare for<a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/scrum-facilitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Sprint Planning<\/a>. Therefore, the Product Owner is encouraged to decompose and refine product backlog items breaking down epics into detailed user stories. This technique is referred to as \u201cslicing the cake\u201d (Cohn, 2004, pg 76). He also references, but does not discuss in detail, Bill Wake\u2019s INVEST criteria (stories need to be <b>i<\/b>ndependent, <b>n<\/b>egotiable, <b>v<\/b>aluable, <b>e<\/b>stimable, <b>s<\/b>mall, and <b>t<\/b>estable).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For sizing stories Pickler offers up t-Shirt sizing (XS through XXXL) and Planning Poker, using a Fibonacci scale through 13 and then substitutes 20 for 21 as Huge (or, XXXL). Today there are apps abounding for smartphones. Therefore, simply search \u201cplanning poker app\u201d to generate numerous options for Android and iOS. Ours includes a coffee break symbol and a questions mark and includes pure Fibonacci and t-shirt sizing options as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition, his discussion of nonfunctional requirements and scaling the product backlog demand careful reading. Similarly, slow down to review his along descriptions of common <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/mistakes-organizations-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mistakes<\/a> when refining the product backlog such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Disguised Requirements Specification<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wish List for Santa<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Requirements Push<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Grooming Neglect<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Competing Backlogs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other Product Owner Considerations<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Finally, his book ends with commentary focused on large projects, discussing items like velocity and <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/scrum-master-facilitator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">burndown<\/a>. Prior to his final discussion of transitioning into the role of Product Owner, he stresses additional <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collaboration<\/a> and makes comments covered by many other posts such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\">Sprint Plannin<\/span><span class=\"s1\">g<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Definition of Done<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\">Daily Scrum<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\">Sprint Backlog<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Burn down and Velocity<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\">Sprint Review<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\">Sprint Retrospective<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Therefore, every Product Owner should review this valuable book, and other Sprint Team members could learn as well. After all, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitation-dos-donts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nobody is Smarter than Everybody<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[1]\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Likewise, according to Google&#8217;s 10 Golden Rules:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">7. Strive to reach <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/consensus-does-not-mean-that-participants-are-going-to-be-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">consensus<\/a>. Modern corporate mythology has the unique decision-maker as a hero. We adhere to the view that the &#8220;many are smarter than the few,&#8221; and solicit a broad base of views before reaching any decision. At Google, the role of the manager is that of an aggregator of viewpoints, not the <a href=\"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/facilitators-vs-dictators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dictator<\/a> of decisions.
