{"id":2377,"date":"2015-07-02T00:01:46","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T04:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/terrencemetz.com\/?p=2377"},"modified":"2026-04-21T13:44:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T17:44:02","slug":"who-are-we","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mgrush.com\/blog\/who-are-we\/","title":{"rendered":"Values Provide and Answer to Who are We ? &#8212; Benjamin Franklin Called Them Virtues"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>We always find it interesting that consulting firms promulgate their own, unique operational definitions.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For instance, the term \u2018values\u2019 can be found called many things including \u201cGuiding Principles\u201d, \u201cTenets of Operation\u201d, \u201cVirtues\u201d, \u201cEssential Elements\u201d, etc. Consequently, values provide answers that describe <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who are We<\/span>. &#8212; Benjamin Franklin called them virtues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Generally, they all describe answers to the basic questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWho are we?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat do we value?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHow do we make trade-offs?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat do we carry with us?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat weighs us down?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHow will we treat each other?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHow will we work together (in support of our mission)?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Methods of Conducting Business<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Similarly, for our purpose, values are narrative descriptions of policies and philosophies. They provide one- or two-sentence descriptions about the principles or internal rules, laws, policies, and philosophies of the business. They tend to describe who we are.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cValues are ideals that give significance to our lives, that are reflected through the priorities we choose, and that we act on consistently and repeatedly.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u2014Brian Hall, PhD, Author of the Hall-Tonna Values Inventory<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">However, many personal values are rarely reflected in corporate standards, temperance or cleanliness as examples.
